Art Elevator | Celeste Byers

Inspired by the natural world, local artist Celeste Byers has created a hand-painted mural inside the elevator at Porto Vista Hotel. Byers is a California based artist specializing in large-scale site-specific murals. Since graduating with a BFA in Illustration from Art Center College of Design in 2012, she has been working as a freelance muralist, illustrator, and installation artist in the United States, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Taiwan, New Zealand, and Australia. Her work is largely inspired by the natural world and the mystical nature hidden in everyday life. She hopes to remind others of the magic and beauty of our universe.

May You Always See Magic is a 12 x 25ft hand-painted mural by San Diego based artist Sarah Stieber located on the rooftop of the Porto Vista Hotel. Stieber highlights the rainbow as a symbolic representation of the Porto Vista Hotel’s mission to nurture an inclusive and creative space for all individuals while engaging San Diego’s diverse cultural community.

Parallel Screens is a video art exhibition curated by Hotel Resident Curator Brunno Silva. The exhibition features video works 24 artists from around the world. Two large screens, situated parallel to each other, will show a two-hour video of two pieces showing at the same time on opposite screens, with a single audio feed.

Selva | Ashley Fenderson

“Selva” is an installation by Ashley Fenderson that transforms the Hotel’s first-floor walkways into a jungle-like atmosphere. Lush foliage, vibrant colors, and misty sea glass overlays are dramatically illuminated by the natural light beaming through.  Ashley’s art practice is inspired by how people use, approach, and interact with the land, physically, historically, and psychologically.

She received her BA in Studio Art from the University of California, Irvine in 2007 and is currently an MFA candidate at San Diego State University.

Porto Vista Hotel and 1805 Gallery present the 2nd edition of Vend Arts, an art exhibition space inside a vending machine.  Vend Arts aims to democratize art distribution and reinvigorate encounters with contemporary art. Rotating exhibitions curated by 1805 Gallery Director Lauren Siry present affordable artworks 24 hours a day 7 days a week and introduce emerging artists to a larger public audience.

On Thursday, December 12, 2019 from 6 PM to 8 PM, Porto Vista Hotel will host an opening reception for the newest exhibition “Material Zones” with live music by Gary Santo-Pietro and beverages available by GlassDoor restaurant. Over 25 artists will present work that examines spatial environments that humans and nonhumans inhabit, articulating personal experiences in a rapidly developing world.

In conjunction with Vend Arts: Material Zones, Porto Vista Hotel is proud to feature large-scale paintings by  Eleanor Greer throughout the lobby. Greer’s gestural oil paintings explore and observe the built environment that transforms every day. The artist works from a personal archive of photographs revealing a landscape in constant flux. In some paintings, abandoned homes gather dust and graffiti inscriptions while others demonstrate a collision of architectural structures collaged together. Greer’s paintings colorfully illuminate the quiet development that reshapes communities, romanticizing dilapidated homes and construction zones that remain unnoticed.

Porto Vista Hotel is thrilled to announce Sky Portals, the newest elevator art installation by artist Cheryl Sorg. As the United States presidential election approaches, many are looking for an escape from the overwhelming tensions caused by partisan politics. For San Diego based artist Cheryl Sorg, this desire to escape manifests into vibrant portals composed of dichroic film, a unique material that filters light into ever-changing reflections of color.

Aaron Glasson is a multi-disciplinary artist from New Zealand who specializes in murals, illustrations, paintings, and installations. His interest in the natural environment and community empowerment heavily influence his designs. Pop up to the 5th-floor rooftop at the Porto Vista Hotel to explore his latest mural filled with blooming florals and lush foliage.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the Porto Vista Hotel is pleased to announce Green Hazard an art exhibition featuring Josh Tonies’ new multi-channel animation film that examines the environmental impact of golf courses.  In conjunction with Green Hazard, the hotel vending machine will exhibit new artworks from over 25 contemporary artists exploring climate change. 

Josh Tonies’ animations navigate expansive golf courses that are digitally rendered from USGS and NASA topographic maps, and then edited and landscaped based on observational data of coastal golf resorts around the world. These picturesque, garden spaces that notoriously create a separation of economic and social classes are transformed by climate events using 3D animation software,  physics simulations and climate models. These lush green manicured landscapes need vast amounts of resources such as land and water which contribute to increased global temperatures. Ironically, these coastal courses are the first to be affected by rising sea levels. 

Although President Donald Trump publicly denies the threat of climate change, Politico reported in 2016, that a permit application for the construction of a seawall to protect his Golf Resort in Ireland was filed by Trump International Golf Links Ireland, citing “global warming and its consequences — increased erosion due to rising sea levels and extreme weather” as the main cause of damage. Green Hazard positions the golf course at the intersection of political and ecological tensions. 

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Josh Tonies is an artist who works with drawing and the moving image. His work centers around temporary ecological studies that take form as animation, drawing, works on paper and book arts. He is a lecturer on record at the University of San Diego and UC San Diego, teaching courses in film, video art, animation, and studio arts. He has exhibited his work most recently at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal, The Center for Fiction in NYC, Comfort Station in Chicago Illinois and the San Diego Museum of Art.

Untitled Selections: Christian Garcia-Olivo

In collaboration with the Porto Vista Hotel, 1805 Gallery is pleased to announce Untitled Selections: Christian Garcia-Olivo. The exhibition showcases a selection of Garcia-Olivo’s most recent works created in 2020 exploring issues of race, gender, and identity. Garcia-Olivo manipulates paint into forms that resemble textiles; folding, draping, and weaving the material into organic shapes that cling to the surface of the canvas. The artist merges the characteristics of paint and textile to blur the boundaries between fine art and craft. 

Garcia-Olivo’s work expands on a larger dialogue regarding craft history and the marginalized demographics that were overlooked within historical fine art narratives.  

The exhibition is curated by Lauren Siry. It is Christian Garcia-Olivo’s first solo exhibition with 1805 Gallery and Porto Vista Hotel contributing to the Arts Program at the hotel. 

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Christian Garcia-Olivo (b. 1988) received his BA in studio arts from San Diego State University (SDSU) in 2015. Christian was an Artist In Residence at Bread & Salt, San Diego, July through September 2020. Past shows include C-Note at San Diego Art Institute; Site Unseen at the Latin American Art Fair; Palm- Sized Oceans at Permanent Storage Projects in Los Angeles, CA.
